In 1961, Wolfram Beck completed his studies in sculpture at the HfBK (now UdK) as a master student. Born in 1930, after the repression of National Socialism, war, injury, and the former GDR, the university meant one thing above all else to him: freedom! He was grateful for this throughout his life.

Starting on September 10, selected works by the award winners will be exhibited in our foundation's premises. The exhibition was opened by the president of the UdK, Prof. Markus Hilgert.

The encounters and discussions with the finalists left a deep impression on all members of the jury.

Among this year's applicants, the jury quickly agreed on the first-place winner, Sarah Ama Duah. She is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice is located at the intersection of sculpture, performance, and clothing. From an Afro-German perspective, she deals with memory culture, colonial continuities, and biographical localization. A central theme of her work is sculptural appreciation practiced as form, gesture, and potential.

Sophia Hallmann subjects morbid materials and destructive events to multiple transformation processes. This transforms their gruesome origins into poetic memento mori. The artist is interested in the manufacturing process and the sculptural process, as well as the associated aspect of temporality and the connection or drastic impact on the human body. She was awarded second place.

Under the pseudonym “SapphosMatrix,” Oliver Wellmann explores places and bodies in a state of ritual transition—or disruption thereof—in his artistic practice. Starting from these moments of liminality, he develops a unique (re)construction from fragments of lost knowledge systems, which convinced the jury to award him third place.
